KEOKUK, IOWA. -- The Iowa State Fire Marshall says 186 people in the Hawkeye State were saved by a smoke alarm in 2011.

One of those people lived in Keokuk.

Fire crews were called to a house at 631 Johnson Street Road back in 2011.

Keokuk Assistant Fire Chief Damon Cackley said the woman living in the house heard the smoke detector going off and managed to get out safely.

But if there wasn't a smoke detector, this fire could have had a fatality.

"We teach children during fire prevention week, you go to sleep and your nose goes to sleep. But your ears will wake you up to the sound of a smoke detector. It's very vital to have," said Cackley.

The average price for a smoke detector is between $15 and $30.

And remember, if you already have a smoke detector in your house, change the batteries twice a year, usually when you change your clocks in the spring and the fall.
