Keep your back in line this winter

QUINCY, ILL. -- Mother Nature has been pretty good to us this winter but snow might still be on the horizon.
In this KHQA Safe Family Health Report, there are certain things to remember so you don't hurt your back this winter.
Your back carries nerves that go all over your body, which meansĀ other areas of your body could be affected by a back injury.
If it's slick out, it's important to wear proper fitting shoes.
A lot of back injuries happen from improperly shoveling snow.
Chiropractor Justin Felsman says it's important to bend at the knees instead of with your back. Then lift with your legs and shovel the snow forward -- without twisting.
Felsman says, "Your back and your spine is everything. If you don't keep it in line, there's a lot of different things that can get affected, not just pain in the back but long term effects on your spine and spinal cord."
Felsman also says the way you sleep can affect your back.
You should sleep on your side with three pillows -- one under your head, one between your arms, and one between your knees.
