LA PLATA, MO. -- The parents of a man wanted in connection with a murder in Louisiana state described him as a "non-violent teddy bear."

Jerry Ronald Graves, 35, of Sandy Hook, Miss., was arrested Jan. 26 after investigators learned he was visiting his family in La Plata, Mo.

Betty and James Moore, live in La Plata. The mother said her son was always willing to help people. Graves had come to La Plata to visit his mother and was considering moving to the town.

"I just want this to be over soon," Betty Moore said.

She and her son were returning from the grocery store around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Police approached her car with their guns drawn as they entered her driveway. Her son was arrested and taken to the Macon County Jail where is currently being held without bond.

Betty Moore called the experience terrifying. She said she is shocked and is having trouble sleeping at night. Her son was acting normal while he was staying in her home, she said.

Graves waived extradition Friday and is waiting transport back to Louisiana.

Investigators for the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana said Graves stabbed John Tille McCain, 63, of Angie, La. Officials there have called it one of the most brutal murder that they've seen in 25 years. Graves is charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery.

McCain was found murdered in his home in November with his throat slit and multiple stabs wounds.

James Moore said his stepson was friends with McCain and that they often went fishing. He said Graves used to call McCain "Uncle Tille." Investigators believe Graves may have come to McCain's house with the intention to rob him.

"We do think that he opened the door for them to enter and we feel like as soon as they entered the home, a struggle ensued from that point on," Chief Scott Blair of the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators don't believe there was a forced entry, but they think McCain fought back. They also believe there maybe more people involved.

Investigators collected DNA at the scene. We learned today from Graves' stepfather that Jerry offered his DNA to authorities in Louisiana and told them that he was heading to La Plata to visit family.
