Multiple county high-speed chase sends two to hospital

MONROE COUNTY, MO. -- UPDATED: February 27 at 7:25 a.m.

The Monroe City teenager who was seriously injured in a high-speed chase of a drunk driver remains at University Hospital in Columbia.

Katy Hays pulled to the side of the road when she saw the flash of emergency lights in her rear-view mirror.  The Missouri Highway patrol was chasing 17-year-old Tristan Davis on suspicion of drunk driving.  Davis' vehicle slammed into the back of Hays' car.

According to the family, Hays had surgery to put a plate in her skull.  She also has several broken ribs and a bruised lung.

A high-speed chase in Monroe County ended in an accident that sent two people to the hospital late Friday night.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says one of its troopers spotted a 1999 Dodge Durango crossing the center line on Highway 24 near Route YY in Randolph County.

The trooper attempted to stop the driver of the car, but failed as the Durango sped into Monroe County.

Just before midnight, the driver, 17-year-old Tristan S. Davis, from Moberly, crashed into the rear of a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The driver of that car was 17-year-old Katy Hayes, of Monroe City.

Hayes received serious injuries from the crash and was transported by an Air- Evac helicopter to the University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Davis was initially transported to the Moberly Regional Medical Center in Moberly and then to the University Hospital in Columbia. There, he was treated for moderate injuries and released.

Davis was arrested for felony second degree assault (operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated resulting in injury), resisting arrest by fleeing, driving while intoxicated, speeding, improper lane usage, fail to stop at a stop sign, and careless and imprudent driving.

Davis is currently lodged in the Monroe County Jail pending formal charges. A comprehensive accident investigation is currently being conducted by the Patrol's Major Crash Team.
