QUINCY, ILL. -- Voters at four polling places in Quincy are going to be able to use a new way to check in with election judges before they actually cast their vote.

Adams County Clerk Georgia Volm said the new electronic check in is called Electronic Poll Books.

Instead of comparing signatures and trying to figure out which precinct the voter has to vote at, the electronic system calculates all that and even tells the election judges if the person has already voted.

The idea is to streamline the voting process for the person who is voting.

"These units, these election poll books are check in only. We're going to ask our voters to check in here and beta test, just test this process. In addition, we're going to ask the old application to vote book because we're verifying signatures both ways. If they're in a hurry, bypass the electronic and go right onto your old polling place books and check your signature there," Volm said.

Money for the new machines came from the federal Help America Vote Act that was started during the Bush administration.
