The McDonough County Clerk's Office in Macomb reported problems Tuesday with moist ballots causing the ballot counters to jam.
County Clerk Gretchen DeJaynes said that the issue was discovered early Tuesday morning.
The ballots were printed by the Lisle, Ill.-based Governmental Business Systems, one of two suppliers of ballots for the state of Illinois. The issue came to light after concerns of widespread issues with ballots in counties and voting stations throughout the state of Illinois.
DeJaynes said the ballots came to her office shrink wrapped about three weeks ago. The packages remained undisturbed until Tuesday when voters began encountering problems.
“We figured out how to cure the problem very easily,” she said. “You could feel the difference in the paper. It was moist.”
Voters with wet-ballot issues were asked to fill out a drier ballot. DeJaynes found a different solution to the persisting problem.
Her office purchased eight hair-driers and her office staff has been hand drying the ballots. This has corrected any issues with jamming counters, she said.
“I've been in this business a very long time and I've never seen anything like this happen,” she said. “It sounds ridiculous, but if you need a hair dryer, I have several of them. I've got pink ones, I've got white ones, I've got gold ones.”
The Associated Press also reported that election officials say almost a quarter of Illinois counties and the city of Aurora are reporting that some primary ballots are too large and don't fit into scanning machines.
Jane Gasperin of the Illinois State Board of Elections says all votes will be counted, but tallying may go slower than usual in affected counties.
She says ballots from two vendors are causing problems in 24 counties. But not all precincts in those counties are affected.
Some ballots are fine, even in the affected precincts.
Counties reporting ballot size problems are: Winnebago, Vermilion, Iroquois, Douglas, Knox, Grundy, McLean, Warren, Lee, Bond, Bureau, Christian, Clark, Coles, DeWitt, DuPage, Edgar, Macon, Macoupin, Moultrie, Putnam, Rock Island, Shelby and Tazewell.
Officials in Pike, Schuyler, Scott, Adams and Hancock counties have not reported problems with ballots Tuesday.
