PALMYRA, MO. -- Tuesday is election night in Missouri as voters decide a variety of issues ranging from tax issues to municipal elections.
Palmyra voters hit the polls at the Monsignor Fairschon Hall Tuesday. Their high priority issues included a 3/8-cent sales tax renewal for continued work on roads and bridges. There's also a race for the Palmyra School Board.
Marion County Clerk Valerie Dornberger says the day's turnout was similar to years past and overall, better than she had anticipated.
"We're having a 25 to 30 percent turnout. I thought it might be lower than that, but I think the nice weather's bringing people out and they're interested in what's on the ballot, so they're out voting," Dornberger said.
One of the most controversial issues in Hannibal is the question of whether the city should ban smoking in public places. Organizers behind putting the smoking ban on the ballot say it protects the health of everyone in town. But some business owners are concerned about how the ban will impact its customer base.
Another ballot issue in Ralls County could decide the future of the county's ambulance service. Voters are being asked to approve a proposed 24-cent increase to the tax levy for the Ralls County Ambulance District. The increase would maintain 24/7 service at the current location in Perry as well as add a location in New London. If the tax levy increase does not pass, Ralls County may have to dissolve its Ambulance District.
Polling locations in Missouri close Tuesday night at 7 o'clock and we will bring you election results as they are released.
