HANNIBAL, MO. -- A Hannibal man is in jail on an assault charge after a 1-year-old child was severely burned.

The Hannibal Police Department was contacted by Hannibal Regional Hospital officials Sept. 7 after the infant was brought in to the hospital with second-degree burns.

The child was in the care of Marvin L. Abbey, 20, who told investigators the baby was scalded by hot water in a bath, according to a HPD press release.

Abbey was arrested and placed on a 24-hour hold at the Marion County Jail on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child and an outstanding Illinois warrant for possession of marijuana.

The baby was transferred to the St. Louis Children's Hospital. Her condition was critical but stable.

Marion County Prosecutor Tom Redington charged Abbey with second-degree assault.

He remains in the Marion County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Abbey is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. Friday hearing before a Marion County judge.
