State Representative for 97th District, Jim Watson leaves in matter of weeks for Iraq
JACKSONVILLE, ILL. -- While many politicians are getting ready for November elections.
One local politician is getting ready to serve his country.
Illinois State Representative for the 97th District, Jim Watson will leave in a matter of weeks for Iraq.
Watson is a staff sargent in the Marines, and will serve on a 270 day tour.
His primary role is to help Iraq build their government.
This isn't the first time Watson has been deployed.
He's a veteran of Desert Storm.
Watson says as an elected official, it's his job to serve our country, and more people should consider doing so.
"If an elected official can't go over and step up, then who can? We can't be above that, and I'm hoping that this is a good example for those who are serving, and those who may want to," Watson said.
By the way Watson is up for re-election this November.
His absence could have an effect on his office, but so far, no one's running against him.
Watson told KHQA that he's received offers for help from representative Jill Tracy, Rich Myers and others.
Saturday, on the KHQA Weekend News, find out how Watson will stay connected with residents and staff in his district using technology.
