DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowans are marking the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Junior with speeches, performances and multimedia displays about the slain civil rights leader.

Governor Culver will attend a celebration in Des Moines by the Iowa Commission on the Status of African Americans, which features Pulitzer Prize winner Leonard Pitts Junior.

Pitts, a columnist for The Miami Herald, won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2004.

Also in Des Moines, a tribute to King called "Through a Child's Eye" will be performed at Drake University.

Elsewhere around the state today, at the Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta, it's a multimedia display on the civil rights movement.

In Waterloo, a unity service is this evening at the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church.

In West Des Moines, attorneys and experts will provide seminars on issues that affect Iowans of limited income and resources, including immigration, taxes and divorce.
