JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- A Senate committee studying county sheriffs recommends charging people more court fees to boost deputy sheriff pay. The money would go to the Missouri Sheriffs' Association to decide what departments get the extra cash.

The committee also says counties should get more money from the state for housing inmates wanted on state charges. Currently, sheriff departments get $21.25 per day. The committee says that should be $1.25 higher.

To increase salaries, there would be an extra $10 fee for serving lawsuits, subpoenas and court orders.

Platte County Judge Gary Witt says state court fees already add up to about $300. He warned fees are often higher than fines for the offense.

A bill to raise salaries has been filed.
