MONROE CITY, MO. -- Nearly thirty people loaded up their rifles and shotguns and headed to Mark Twain Lake. This weekend catered to the physically disabled. The Indian Creek Recreation Area only sees this once a year. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has hosted its Deer Hunt for the Disabled for the last 25 years.

"A lot of guys are hunting now. You know a lot of the guys were life-long hunters and thought they have to give up the dream and now they got it back," said one of the original coordinators of the event, Robert Kendrick.

The hunt gives people who are physically disabled a chance to get out and hunt. For some, this is their only chance to hunt all year. These hunters are given a path throughout the area to set up and hunt for the weekend. This recreation area is a park year round, not allowing any hunting of any sort.

The hunters brought in 43 deer, which is higher than they ever had, and that was just day one. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also offers a disabled persons turkey hunt in the spring season. The event is paid for through fundraisers bringing in around four thousand dollars a year.
