QUINCY, ILL. -- It's an honor given to only a handful of schools in the country every year. This year, Blessed Sacrament School in Quincy made the list.

Hundreds of people attended a church service Sunday night to celebrate the school's achievement in receiving the Franklin Covey Leader in Me Lighthouse Award. It's a title given to schools that teach leadership in the community.

Blessed Sacrament had to meet 146 criteria to receive the award, all of which are based off of the "7 Habits of Highly Effective Individuals."

Principal Chris Reichert says this award is a great way of showing how the habits blend with the catholic identity.

"We even bring it into our curriculum. When we're reading novels or short stories, we'll ask, who's being proactive? Were they synergizing? So we bring it into everything we do now days," Reichert said.

"The simple thing is, it's a school when you walk in. You just feel a difference. I know its crazy to say, because you're looking at tons of data points, but you walk in and every kid you see has they voice, is empowered to lead, feels proud of their community, has ownership in a school and that's what this place is. You can walk in and tell, every kid feels like this is their home," Dustin Odham, a client partner with Franklin Covey said.

More than a thousand schools across the globe have registered to be a LightHouse Award recipient.

Blessed Sacrament marks the first school in the state of Illinois to receive the honor as well as the first catholic school to do so.
