AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Edwin "Bud" Shrake, an author and journalist who wrote the best-selling golf book "Harvey Penick's Little Red Book," has died at 77.

His death early Friday of lung cancer at an Austin hospital was confirmed by longtime friend Dan Jenkins, an author and journalist in Fort Worth. Jenkins said one of Shrake's sons was at his bedside.

Shrake started his journalism career at the Fort Worth Press. He worked for the Dallas Times Herald and The Dallas Morning News before moving on to Sports Illustrated. He wrote at least 10 novels, including "Blessed McGill" in 1968 and "Custer's Brother's Horse" in 2007. His 1992 golf book with Penick was a best-seller.

Shrake is survived by two sons and several grandchildren.
