WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Maria Sharapova has been defeated by Alona Bondarenko 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Warsaw Open.

Sharapova was playing in her first singles tournament since being sidelined for nearly 10 months after shoulder surgery. She won her first two matches before Thursday's loss.

The 39th-ranked Bondarenko broke the Russian twice in the first set and three times in the second, despite Sharapova connecting on 78 percent of her first serves. Bondarenko cruised to a 5-0 lead in the second set before completing the win.

Sharapova had surgery for a torn rotator cuff and missed the past two Grand Slam tournaments.
