NEIL HUGENBERG EARNS A PLACE ON MIZZOU BASEBALL TEAM'S TRAVELING ROSTER
When the University of Missouri Baseball team opens its season on Friday, Hannibal product Neil Hugenberg will be in uniform and ready to eat up innings for Tim Jamieson.
Beating the longest of odds, the hard throwing Hannibal Pirate right hander found out Monday that his bid to walk-on to the Mizzou Baseball team not only had netted him a place in the program in the long term, but an immediate spot on the active roster as a true freshman.
Despite boasting a fastball clocked in the low 90's in high school, Hugenberg (who earned All State honors as a Sophomore) did not receive a great deal of recruiting attention. A top ten student at Hannibal, Hugenberg decided to attend Mizzou for academic reasons and decided only later to make a walk-on bid for the baseball team. As first reported here this fall, Hugenberg successfully played his way into the program with a fantastic showing this summer for the Mizzou coaches, who told him one way or another he would have a future in the Tiger Program. Jumping into the mix for a nationally ranked program as a true freshman however and earning a spot on the traveling roster, however, exceeded everyone's expectations.
