The Quincy men's soccer coach achieves a rare feat with shutout win over Kentucky Wesleyan.
Quincy University men's soccer head coach Jack Mackenzie added another milestone to his remarkable coaching career on Sunday as he led the Hawks to a 4-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan and recorded his 500th career coaching victory.
In doing so, Mackenzie is just the 10th coach at any level to reach the 500 win plateau. He joins fellow coaching legends Joe Bean, Cliff McGrath, Jay Martin, Tony Tocco, Jerry Yeagley, Stephen Negoesco, Ron Butcher, Dan Gilmore, Horst Richardson and Michael Parker as the only coaches to attain 500 coaching wins. Mackenzie holds a current record of 500-249-71 and is the sixth winningest active coach.
Although the Hawks outshot Kentucky Wesleyan 14-1 in the first-half, their hard work did not pay off until the final 45 minutes. Grant Ellison gave the Hawks the lead with a goal just 2:45 into the second-half off a pass from Carl Hodges. Jeff Vaninger added to the lead with a goal at the 72-minute mark on a pass from Corey Eatherton. Quincy opened the game with a pair of goals just three-minutes apart as Eatherton and Jack Wedemeier finished off the scoring. Vaninger and Michael Andres assisted on the final two goals.
Quincy keeper D.J. Lampert made one save in recording the shutout as Quincy improves to 7-3 overall and 6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
