MENDON, ILL. -- It's been more than a decade since the Unity High School football team has played past regular season.

But with a 5-4 record this year, the Mustangs are heading back to the postseason.

KHQA's Jarod Wells was in Mendon to catch a glimpse of the growing excitement for Friday night (10/29).

The last time the Mustangs were able to ay they were heading to the playoffs was back in the late 90's. 1999 to be exact was the last time they were postseason bound.

Senior wide receiver Brandon Mayfield said, "Well it's really exciting. A lot of us in the beginning of the year were expecting to maybe win three games or at least get that one win, but we're in the playoffs now and it's pretty awesome."

History teacher Keith Carothers said, "Everybody's pretty pumped up for it, the kids are excited to get up there and go watch a playoff game which they haven't experience on their highschool career yet. Their excited for it, teachers are excited for it."

Anyone driving past the high school can see that as they are greeted with a 'heading to playoffs' sign. Inside the school the players lockers are adorned with signs, all showing the attitude throughout the hallways Unity High School has changed.

Carothers said, "These guys have been through their struggles in the past couple years so it's amazing to see the turnaround they've had this year. As a coach of another sport hopefully a little bit of that confidence and winning attitude carries on for us.

The Mustangs are hoping for a better outing than the '99 season when they were knocked out in the first round.

Mayfield said, "A lot of us are wanting it and we think we can beat these guys."

Sophomore Lauren Lewis said, "We are really excited and we can't wait to win."

The Mustangs take on Deer Creek Macinaw Friday night (10/29) in Macinaw.
