ROCK ISLAND, ILL. (AP) -- A $5.1 million deficit is forcing the Rock Island-Milan School District to consider dropping cheerleading, as well as eight team sports.

The district's athletic director, Bob Swanson, tells The Rock Island Argus the district wants the athletic department to cut its budget by 10 percent -- or $80,000. The only way he can see to do that is to eliminate athletic programs at the junior high and high school level.

Swanson says he doesn't want to do it, but he is proposing eliminating cheerleading and both boys' and girls' teams in swimming, tennis, cross country and golf. The cuts would affect 203 students.

School board member Dave Rockwell says the proposed cuts will be submitted to the school board on Tuesday, with a final decision probably coming Feb. 22.
