FLORENCE, ILL. -- The Illinois Department of Transportation says steel fabrication work has started on parts that will be used to repair a bridge that spans the Illinois River between Scott and Pike counties.

Midwest Foundation Corporation of Tremont, Illinois won the competitive bidding process for the fabrication work.

The company is working on procuring materials and equipment at this time.

After the first of the year, Vince Madonia with IDOT expects barges and cranes to be on the water, ready to begin work.

The bridge was closed earlier this summer after inspectors from the Illinois Department of Transportation found some problems with the lift span superstructure.

Repair of the bridge is expected to be completed by early spring 2013.
