HANNIBAL, MO. -- Hannibal residents have experienced flooding like never before.

Some minor flooding remains Tuesday evening, but for the most part the major flooding is over in Hannibal. But as you can imagine, Tuesday's flash floods caught Hannibal residents by surprise.

A resident near Lyndell and Warren Barrett told KHQA she has been living there since 1985 and has never seen anything like this.

It was a struggle for her to get through water and debris in her own backyard just to move her car.

And once she managed to get to her car she said the water was up to the running boards.

"I looked out my front door and I said 'Oh my God! Bear Creek is coming to my yard.' I waded in water up to my knees in my backyard," said Hannibal resident Cathy Morgan.

On Market Street late Tuesday morning some cars that were unable to be moved were almost completely underwater.

Almost every back yard had water running through it.

We also heard reports that water came up through basements so quick it actually buckled the floors above it.

Residents were shocked by how quickly the water came up.

"My sister got up at 5:30 a.m. and looked and there was no water out here, everything was okay. I got up at 7:30 a.m. and looked and we already had it up on the asphalt and it was starting to get in the garages. So we got all the cars moved. By that time it started coming over that levee down there and it was like a river, there was nothing we could do," said Hannibal resident Deborah Rhodes.
