Federal funding for public assistance, not individual assistance

HANNIBAL, MO. -- A federal disaster declaration means federal dollars will be coming to Hannibal and northeast Missouri from last month's flooding.

But that doesn't mean you'll see any of that money.

The declaration is for public assistance which allows local governments to get federal dollars for emergency response and recovery expenses.

"It covers roads and bridges, infrastructure, culverts, any municipal costs, county road costs, anything of that nature," said Marion County Emergency Management Director John Hark.

John Hark says as far as he knows nothing has been mentioned as far as individual assistance.

"I've been working with representative Rachael Bringer and she's been working with the governor's office and with SEMA to see if we can file an appeal and go back to the president again. It's his call, if he opts not to do it that's on his shoulders not mine," said Hark.

Hark says representatives from all levels of government, including local, state and federal, have been working hard to get individual assistance for northeast Missouri.
