Police are treating discovery of woman's body as a homicide

QUINCY, ILL. -- Quincy police are treating the discovery of human remains after a weekend fire as a homicide Thursday morning.

Adams County Coroner Jim Keller says the body of 48-year-old Nancy Streitmatter of Quincy was discovered Monday inside the burned out remains of Salvage Lumber on Oak Street.

"The cause and manner of the death of Ms. Streitmatter are pending final toxicology and examination results, which will not be available for several weeks," a release from Keller's office said.

Investigators identified her remains based on dental and medical records.

Salvage Lumber, located at 219 Oak St., caught fire Sunday just before 8:30 p.m. Crews were called to the scene of heavy smoke, which escalated to a five-alarm fire. Click here for our original story.

Evidence from the fire scene sent to the Illinois State Crime Lab for evaluation.

Although officials have not ruled on the official cause and manner of her death, Quincy Police Chief Rob Copley says the investigation will be "treated as a homicide."

Chief Copley said, "We do that anytime the circumstances are suspicious and that's what we have here. The fire is suspicious, the death is suspicious so until we know exactly what we are dealing with we have to treat it as a homicide so we do not lose valuable evidence."

Salvage Lumber is an antique wood restoration shop. Owner Rick Delaney watched as the fire gutted his cabinet shop in the rear of the building. He said the front portion of the building is used for office space. Delaney said he had not been in the building since Friday and does not have insurance on the shop.
