LOUISIANA, MO. -- Federal investigators have told Louisiana officials that pornography accessed via a city computer was not the work of outside hackers.

That means illicit websites were dialed up by someone locally, but authorities have not identified a suspect and no arrests have been made.

City Administrator Bob Jenne said Tuesday that the FBI continues its investigation.

The probe began in February after officials discovered a wireless Internet connection in the water department facility on 30th St. had been misused. In addition to porn, other unauthorized websites apparently were accessed.

Authorities originally speculated that the misuse might have been the work of hackers, but Jenne said the FBI told him recently that the hacker theory had been ruled out.

No customer water accounts were jeopardized, and the city has cooperated fully.

The FBI approached the city Feb. 2 and notified them that a city-owned computer had pinged at least twice in the last couple of months for a child pornography website, once in November of 2011 and once in December of 2011.

This computer had been used to access illicit websites since 2009.

Many department employees had access to the computer in question, which was located in a maintenance shed shared by the water distribution employees. The computer is used by as many as 10 employees Jenne said in February that the computer is password protected, but everyone knows the same password. There are not individual log ins.
