PALMYRA, MO. -- The doors of the former Napa Auto Parts building continued to swing open Saturday as one family after another walked into to check out the newest hot spot in town.

The "Main Hangout," at 110 West Main Cross, in Palmyra officially opened to the public this weekend.

Owner Ron Kraft said the idea for the hangout came from his 17-year-old son who always talked about the lack of a hangout spot in the area. Kraft's original idea was to create a youth-teen center, but it quickly expanded into a youth-family center.

"A lot of the time, kids come to hang out, do their homework, take a nap if it's been a rough day at school. The other thing they can do is socialize. They're mingling real well together," Kraft said.

Kids can take a break or break into a sweat with a Thursday dance class at the hangout.

"I just like it because everyone's friendly here. There's no fights, no arguments, everyone's kind. It's just a really good place. I like the video games ... ping pong and pool are my main thing," Riley Fee, a fan of the Main Hangout, said.

Kraft says the Main Hangout will always have at least one of about 13 adult volunteers on staff, all of which have passed a background check. Kraft and the Main Hangout team plan to host a Valentine's Day Dance as well as a Super Bowl party.

The Main Hangout is open weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays from noon to sunset and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
