Some droughted rivers now close to flooding
MIDWEST (AP) -- Work on clearing the pinnacles from portions of the Mississippi River continues.
The Army Corps of Engineers completed the work near Thebes, Illinois and now crews are moving about 31 miles north near Grand Tower, Illinois.
While the work is being done, the channel is expected to be closed from midnight to noon for about 10 days.
Lack of substantial rain caused the river levels to drop to historic lows revealing the pinnancles. But thanks to rains this week, some rivers that were once at historic low levels are close to flooding.
Rainfall amounts in some parts of Missouri and Illinois were close to 3 inches.
The Mississippi is also expected to rise by several feet because of this much needed rainfall.
