Tuesday night, the Tri-State area had a chance to see the planet Venus make its final trek across the face of the sun as seen from Earth until the year 2117.

The last time this event occurred was on June 8, 2004 when it was watched by millions of people across the world.

The Western Illinois University Department of Physics made sure residents had a chance to view the Transit of Venus on Tuesday night in Macombs Chandler Park.

The physics department made arrangements to view the Transit of Venus at two locations in the Macomb area.  Two solar telescopes were set up at the south edge of Chandler Park in downtown Macomb, and physics professors were on hand to answer questions.  Two telescopes were also set up at the University's Malpass Library Archives Unit (sixth floor).

Hundreds of people turned out at the Chandler Park location to see the spectacle.

WIU Associate Professor Kishor Kapale, Ph.D. says he enjoys when an event such as this peaks curiosity into the world of physics and astronomy.

If you missed Tuesdays event, not to fear, just mark your 200 year planner for 2117.
